NENNET is a High Quality Research Network on Nanosciences, Material and Energy research in Lithuania. It started on July 1st, 2004 and is funded for three years. It has eight organisation members - five from Lithuania, one Lithuanian member from Belgium, one from Germany and one from Ireland. NENNET is a Network of Expertise based on the German model. The strategic objectives of NENNET are: o To integrate networking R&D resources on a national level, achieving critical mass for the generation of new knowledge, and to participate in ERA activities. o To achieve synergy of R&D and industry by focusing on application-driven approaches, and to contribute to a 3% GDP target. This report briefly examines world trends in each field of science and draws implications for Lithuanian research. It proceeds to focus on the Fifth and Sixth EU Framework Programmes (FP5 and FP6), before examining Lithuanian expertise in Nanosciences, Material and Energy research and identifying areas of FP7 where Lithuanian expertise could participate. Nanosciences and nanotechnologies (N&N) Nanosciences and nanotechnologies (N&N) have opened the door to all sorts of possibilities. Familiar materials, ranging from gold to carbon soot, display startling and useful new properties at nanoscale (10 –9, or 0.000000001, or 10 hydrogen atoms in a row). Some transmit light or electricity; others become harder than diamonds or potent chemical catalysts. Scientists promise dramatic new materials and medicines that would make alchemists proud. In the immediate future, consumers will encounter nanotechnologies in the form of nick proof trim on Hummers; Wilson tennis rackets with extra pop and golf balls designed to fly straight.UF~
