       Foresight nanotechnology prizes go to Leigh, Stoddart, Freitas, Ou      
              ForesightNanotech Institute, the leading think tank and public interestorganization focused on nanotechnology, awarded prizes to leaders inresearch, communication and study in the field of nanotechnology at theProductive Nanosystems Conference, held in Arlington, Virginia. Theseprizes are conferred on individuals whose work in research,communication and study are moving our society towards the ultimategoal of atomically-precise manufacturing.
            The2007 Foresight Institute Feynman Prizes, named in honor of pioneerphysicist Richard Feynman, are given in two categories, one forexperimental work and the other for theory in advances innanotechnology. This year the Theory Prize was won by David Leigh ofUniversity of Edinburgh, UK, and the Experimental Prize went to FraserStoddart of UCLA.
            The Foresight Prize inCommunication was presented to nanotechnology author and theoristRobert A Freitas Jr. A Rice University graduate student, Fung-Suong Ou,received the Distinguished Student Prize.
            “Thisyear’s winning research illustrates the great strides toward productivenanosystems now taking place throughout the world,” said Dr. PearlChin, President of Foresight Nanotech Institute. “The goal ofmanufacturing with atomic precision advances daily, and we can expecteven faster progress building on the work being honored today.”
            Foresight Institute Feynman Prizes – Experimental and Theory
            Winning in the Experimental category for 2007 is [url=http://stoddart.chem.ucla.edu/]J. Fraser Stoddart[/url],Fred Kavli Professor of NanoSystems Sciences, UCLA, and former Directorof the California NanoSystems Institute, who has pioneered thesynthesis and assembly of unique active molecular machines formanufacturing into practical nanoscale devices. His manyaccomplishments in synthetic chemistry have produced functionalmolecular machines, in particular a ‘molecular muscle’ for the purposesof amplifying and harnessing molecular mechanical motions, that mayultimately lead to the construction of atomically-precise productsthrough the use of molecular machine systems.
            This year’s winner in the Theory category, [url=http://www.catenane.net/]David A. Leigh[/url]of University of Edinburgh, is the world’s foremost pioneer on thedesign and synthesis of artificial molecular motors and machines fromfirst principles and one of the most dynamic and innovative chemists ofhis generation, focusing on the construction of molecular machinesystems that function in the realm of Brownian motion. Leigh’stheoretical studies of synthetic molecular motors and machinescontribute an important element toward the development of molecularmachine systems capable of atomically-precise fabrication.
            Foresight Institute Prize in Communication
            The 2007 Communication prizewinner — [url=http://www.rfreitas.com/]Robert A. Freitas Jr.[/url],a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Molecular Manufacturing —is best known for Nanomedicine, the definitive book on the medicalapplications of molecular nanotechnology and available in its entiretyat [url]www.nanomedicine.com[/url]; and Kinematic Self-Replicating Machines, thefoundational description of system architectures for molecularnanotechnology, available at [url]www.molecularassembler.com.[/url] With almost100 technical papers, book chapters, or popular articles he is one ofthe most prolific authors in the field of molecular nanotechnology.
            Foresight Institute Distinguished Student Prize
            [url=http://www.rpi.edu/%7Eajayan/locker/people.html#Grad]Fung Suong Ou[/url]is a Ph.D. candidate now at Rice University who has demonstrated thatit is possible to use a combinatorial approach to build nanowires fromdissimilar components. Specifically, he has fabricated multi-segmentedone-dimensional hybrid structures composed of carbon nanotubes andmetal nanowires.
