Job description: There are two Ph.D. positions available in the Junior Research Group of Richard Vink at the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the University of Goettingen (Germany). The topic is on the interplay between liquid crystals, confinement, and quenched disorder. As is well known, confined liquid crystals are relevant for applications. In fact, if you are reading this announcement on your computer, chances are that such an application is right in front of you! Interestingly, there is still much to be learned about the behavior of confined liquid crystals in the presence of quenched disorder. By quenched disorder, one could think of non-mobile impurities, around which the mobile liquid crystal molecules move.

The general aim of the Ph.D. positions is to improve our understanding of such systems, mostly through the use of computer simulation. You will work in close collaboration with the Junior Group Leader (Richard Vink), who has a track record in the field of Monte Carlo computer simulation. In addition, the Institute of Theoretical Physics in Goettingen is renowned for its theoretical expertise, giving rise to a lively and stimulating research environment.

If you hold, or are about to obtain, a Masters degree (or equivalent) in theoretical and/or computational physics, and the above research topic interests you, feel free to contact me for more information.
