Job description: Applications are welcome for both M.Sc. and Ph.D. Physics students at the University of Lethbridge. The U of L Physics Department is research intensive. Our department consists of 10 professors and 3 academic assistants, complemented currently by postdoctoral researchers and other research support staff. Currently (Fall 2007), we have 5 graduate students, a number we are working to increase. A significant number of undergraduate students are also involved in faculty research.
Faculty research areas cover a wide variety of topics:
•Experimental astrophysics, development of ground-based and space-borne spectrometers operating at submillimetrewavelengths
•Laboratory spectroscopy with applications to remote sensing
•Theoretical study of strongly correlated electron systems
•Rotating fluid dynamics with applications to the planetary fluid cores and rotating stars
•Satellite image spectroradiometryand terrestrial scene physics and analysis
•General relativity, quantum gravity, black holes physics, cosmology, high energy physics, quantum information theory
•Magnetic resonance contrast agents and mechanisms applied to brain function
•Ultra high vacuum variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy
•Solid-state NMR spectroscopy: foundations, technique development and biophysical applications
•Terrestrial remote sensing science physics and analysis, spectroradiometricimaging, satellite sensor and image radiometry, and vegetation canopy spectral reflectance
•Earth and planetary rotation, dynamics and magnetic fields
Physics graduate study at the U of L offers the advantages of a small, dynamic, expanding department in a smaller university (~8.5K undergrads), in a city with a very reasonable cost of living, close to the beautiful Rocky Mountains. Both undergraduate and graduate students enjoy the benefits of extensive and interactive supervision. Over 450 students are pursuing graduate studies at our university. The minimum level of support is about $14,000 /year.For further information, details on English proficiency requirements see our departmental website, http://www.uleth.ca/fas/phy/, the website of our School of Graduate Studies, http://www.uleth.ca/sgs/ or contact: Dr. Adriana Predoi-Cross, Physics Department, University of Lethbridge, 4401 University Drive, Lethbridge, AB T1K 3M4CANADA (adriana.predoicross@uleth.ca)
