This paper, part of a special issue of Advanced Materials highlighting how nanomaterials have enhanced the field of biomedical research, presents a comprehensive picture of the synthesis, biofunctionalization, and in vitro testing of hollow, gold nanocages as novel therapeutic agents.  These nanostructures were used for the destruction of breast cancer cells through photo-thermal transduction.

The experiments describe the synthesis of these nanocages (formed by galvanic replacement of Au3+ with monodisperse, single crystalline Ag cubes), the biofunctionalization of these gold surfaces with tumor-specific antibodies, and how the authors were able to induce the death of cancer cells via incubation with these nanocages and subsequent irradiation at the lowest power densities reported to date.

These experiments demonstrate that it is possible to control the function of these nanocages by tuning their absorption and scattering cross-sections; this is achieved by manipulating structure size, composition, and porosity.  A thorough understanding of the plasmonic properties of metallic, nanoscale structures coupled with the ability to synthesize nanostructures via novel methods opens the door for improved and new therapeutic methods.
