专家问答(转)1:什么是纳米技术对催化研究的挑战和机遇

What is the major challenge of nanotechnology in the heterogenous catalysis field?

Artificial catalysis is an example of a field that has used nanoscale patterning since well before the field of nanoscience and nanoenegineering even began.  Photography is another good example of this.  With the ability to image and control structure on the nanoscale, we can hope to make new generations of catalysts.

My own area of knowledge is more limited to inorganic nanoparticles, so my comments are restricted to this class.  Using inorganic nanocrystals, can we achieve very stable catalysts with high turnover rates?  Many nanoparticle-based catalysts rely on strongly faceted particles, with specially active sites, and these particles may slowly rearrange to yield "round" particles with reduced turnovers.  Could inorganic particles ever be controlled in such a way as to display high selectivity?  Is it possible to control the arrangements of nanoscale materials such that there is cooperative behavior in achieving an overall catalytic transformation?  There is much to work on here.
