Professor John H Xin (忻浩忠) graduated from the University of Leeds, UK with a PhD in textile chemistry. His main teaching and research interests include functional and smart textile and garment treatments, new functional material synthesis, nano-encapsulation systems with controllable release, colouration technology, colour management, colour quality control and communication technology. He has published over 200 book chapters, SCI journal papers, conference proceedings, and patents and has been invited as keynote speakers and session chairs in numerous international conferences. His work in the development of new and novel surface functional treatments based on nanotechnology, including repellency surfaces, protective, personal health care fabrics, and self-cleaning fabric has been valued highly in both academic quality and industrial applications and the work on self-cleaning fabric was the headline news of Nature of UK (June 2004) and the self-cleaning garment developed won a gold medal in 34th Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions in 2006. He is a Charted Colorist of the Society of Dyers and Colorists, UK and a panel member of the International Editorial Board of the prestigious Coloration Technology published by the Society of Dyers and Colorists and the editor of the Journal of Textile Institute, published by the Textile Institute based in the U.K.&y'^"D _wn&GD
Areas of Expertise
I4R4E;W3`E He and his research team successfully developed many new and novel technologies from protection clothing (UV-blcoking, water-, oil-, and soil-repellency) to personal health care treatments (anti-microbial, skin protection and care, etc.) and multi-functional, self-cleaning treatment. The achievement in this area can be reflected by quite a number of US patents, over 50 research papers in the top SCI journals in the field of material science, chemistry, and textile technology. His work in the area of self-cleaning fabric has been the headline news from the world top science journal Nature published in UK ( http://www.nature.com/nsu/040607/040607-9.html) and the 2nd generation of self-cleaning garment developed won a gold medal in 34th Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions in 2006. The developments of nanostructured lotus leave repellent surfaces, UV-blcoking treatment, and nano-encapsulation and nano core-shell particles for skin and health care, anti-odour, and other controlled release features set new standards for high value-added treatments and products in textile industry. He was appointed as a deputy coordinator for the Nanotechnology Center for Functional and Intelligent Textiles and Apparel, the only nanotechnology programme in Hong Kong dedicated to the R & D in textile and apparel area funded by the Innovation Technology Commission of the Hong Kong SAR Government.
