Guest edited by Wilhelm Huck (University of Cambridge); Fabio Biscarini (CNR-Istituto per lo Studio dei Materiali Nanostrutturati (ISMN), Bologna) and Jon Preece (University of Birmingham) this special issue of [i]Chem Soc Rev[/i] highlights and reviews a number of recent breakthroughs in the design, the assembling and the investigation of properties of nanostructured materials.

Topics covered in this special collection of reviews range from the formation of polymeric nanoparticles to molecular actuators; from systems designed for self-organisation at surfaces and interfaces to those for carrying drugs and active systems in biomedical diagnostics; and even using biomolecular templates to construct artificial assemblies.
