【Advanced Functional Materials】Ionic-liquid-functionalized graphene nanosheets

One-Step Ionic-Liquid-Assisted Electrochemical Synthesis of Ionic-Liquid-Functionalized Graphene Sheets Directly from Graphite (p NA)

Ionic-liquid-functionalized graphene nanosheets (GNSIL) are produced by a simple, green, one-step electrochemical approach (see figure). A GNSIL/polystyrene composite is shown to have excellent electrical conductivity, 3-15 times that of polystyrene composites with single-walled carbon nanotube filler.

Graphite, inexpensive and available in large quantities, unfortunately does notreadily exfoliate to yield individual graphene sheets. Here a mild,one-step electrochemical approach for the preparation ofionic-liquid-functionalized graphite sheets with the assistance of anionic liquid and water is presented. These ionic-liquid-treatedgraphite sheets can be exfoliated into functionalized graphenenanosheets that can not only be individuated and homogeneouslydistributed into polar aprotic solvents, but also need not be furtherdeoxidized. Different types of ionic liquids and different ratios ofthe ionic liquid to water can influence the properties of the graphenenanosheets. Graphene nanosheet/polystyrene composites synthesized by aliquid-phase blend route exhibit a percolation threshold of 0.1 vol %for room temperature electrical conductivity, and, at only 4.19 vol %,this composite has a conductivity of 13.84 S m^-1, which is 3-15 times that of polystyrene composites filled with single-walled carbon nanotubes.B'E(~:Q.S,uL6T

D-K9r#N@#` The preparation of visible-light-absorbing nanostructured ZnS:Ni2+ photocatalysts using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) is presented. The nanoparticles are significantly more active and stable towards H2 evolution from aqueous K2SO3 and Na2S solution than conventional ZnS:Ni2+ powders, owing to their good crystallinity and high surface area. This demonstrates the utility of USP in the preparation of highly active photocatalysts.
