Job description: ID22 is an undulator beamline devoted to high resolution X-ray micro-analysis and micro-imaging. This beamline covers the 6-70 keV energy range and offers a unique combination of micro-analytical techniques, such as micro-X-ray fluorescence analysis, micro-X-ray absorption spectrometry, micro-diffraction and absorption/phase contrast imaging and tomography. Areas of interest involve the study of elemental distributions, chemical speciation, morphology and crystalinity of biological, mineralogical or Materials Science samples with micron and sub-micron lateral resolution. Innovative programmes such as 3D X-ray computed tomography and spectroscopic techniques as a contrast mechanism for chemical imaging are currently under development.

THE FUNCTION:
You will participate in research programs, the operation of the instruments and activities involving external users. In particular, you will join in the effort of the group to upgrade the performance of the experimental end-stations and to develop micro-analysis methodologies. You will also be encouraged to develop your own research programs, which should exploit the unique beamline capabilities.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
You must hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in physical or biological sciences or a related discipline. Previous experience in X-ray imaging techniques or/and X-ray spectromicroscopy is requested. Aptitudes in instrumentation are highly desirable. Background and experience in image processing will be considered as an asset.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The ESRF shares a site with several other major European scientific institutes; it offers an exciting opportunity in an international atmosphere. New staff coming from outside the Grenoble area benefit from installation allowances to move and settle in the area. An expatriation allowance may be payable in accordance with specific regulations. Only candidates holding a Ph.D. obtained less than 3 years ago are eligible for Post-doctoral positions. Post-doctoral fellows are employed for an eighteen-month period with a possibility of extension to another six to eighteen months and the contract should as soon as possible. The ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from disabled persons.
If you are interested, please send us a fax (+33 (0)4 76 88 24 60) or an e-mail (recruitm@esrf.fr) with your address, and we will provide you with an application form.
