Job description: 2 PhD positions are available in the Ultrafast Optical Processing Group at INRS-EMT in Montreal, Canada.
INRS-EMT is a postgraduate degree-granting Research Institute located in Montreal. Our Center of Excellence (INRS-EMT) is part of the Universite du Quebec and is devoted to the development of various research programs in a variety of technological areas, including photonics, nanotechnologies, and telecommunications. Our group (UOP) is currently investigating innovative approaches in photonics based on various free space and fiber technologies. Our focus is in the following applications: (i) design of novel integrated devices for all-optical signal processing; (ii) study of the basic properties of the interaction between light and matter in micro and nano waveguides; (iii) investigation of novel electro-optic, magneto-optic and nonlinear materials for optoelectronics applications using micro and nanotechnologies and iv) realization of extreme terahertz sources for THz imaging and nonlinear THz optics. The present position(s) are dedicated to a) the study of novel nonlinear phenomena for all optical switching (in a fiber and an integrated format) and b) the development of “intelligent thin film materials” for optoelectronics and photonics applications compatible with C-MOS (silicon) technology, and are especially focused on the development of theme (ii) and theme (i) and (iii), respectively. Therefore, a strong background/interest in (some of) the following subjects is highly desirable: thin film technology (in particular, ferroelectric films for electro-optics and garnett films for magneto-optics), fabrication, integrated optics, fiber optics, optoelectronics device design, semiconductor technology, their characterization etc.
