Job description: At least one graduate student assistantship is available for students
to pursue a PhD in Physics. This position is available from September
2008. Students with a strong background in physics or engineering are
invited to apply.

Granular materials are found in a wide variety of industrial, natural,
and technological settings. This research project has a broad appeal
to the soft condensed matter physics community as it belongs to a
large class of problems concerned with the mechanical rigidity of
amorphous materials including, colloidal dispersions, glasses, and
polymer and biological networks.

The PhD candidate will be expected to have a knowledge and strong
interest in statistical physics, experience in programming (FORTRAN,
C, and C++) and LINUX. The candidate will perform extensive
simulations (molecular dynamics in both serial and parallel
architectures), thorough theoretical analyses of the numerical
results, and image processing.

The PhD candidate will be required to successfully complete the core
requisites of the department, perform teaching duties as required, and
mentor fellow undergraduate students involved in the project.

Please respond to this advert by sending a CV (including grades, a
statement of research interests, and publications) and the names of at
least two references. A proper command of the English language is
necessary and only electronic formats (preferentially PDF) will be
reviewed.
