Job description: Magnetic nanoparticles have a number of interesting physical properties and are finding an increasing variety of applications, for example in magnetic recording and biophysics. The topic of magnetic nanoparticles is at a very exciting stage, driven by advances in computational power, which are allowing the development of increasingly sophisticated models, and by advances in electron microscopy which are giving unprecedent information on nanoparticle atomic structures. The aim of the project is to develop Molecular Dynamic models of nanoparticle structures using an embedded atom potential. The models will be compared with calculations using the ab-inito CASTEP package. Atomistic models will be used to study the magnetic properties of the nanoparticles. The models will be used to investigate the ordering phenomenon in FePt nanoparticles to answer the important question – is there a minimum size for the transition to the ordered state? The first investigation will also be made of the structure and properties of complex magnetic ‘core/shell’ structures, especially of Ferromagnetic/Antiferromagnetic structures. The project will be carried out in collaboration with colleagues in the York/Jeol Nanocentre and Seagate research, Pittsburgh, who are carrying out related experimental work.
