Job description: It has recently been shown experimentally that it is possible to change the state of a magnetic material using circularly polarised laser light only (with no externally applied magnetic field). Even more remarkably, the magnetisation can be reversed on a timescale less than 1 picosecond. This is a highly important new discovery at the forefront of solid state physics, with important implications for spin electronics and magnetic recording. The FANTOMAS project is a recently funded EU training network led by the group at Nijmegen (NL) who discovered the phenomenon. The physics of the phenomenon is not at all understood, and the York Computational Magnetism group is central to the drive to provide basic theoretical understanding. The project will involve the development of theoretical and computational models of magnetic spin dynamics on the femtosecond timescale, with special emphasis on the understanding of the interaction between the laser light and the spin. The models will be used to understand the basic physics of optically-induced magnetisation reversal, and the project will involve close collaboration with experimental groups within the FANTOMAS project.
