Job description: Many systems in nature, often linked to catastrophic behavior, have power law distributed event sizes. Hence there is no limitation to the size of a catastrophe. Examples are snow-avalanches, earthquakes, rain and stock-markets. The aim of the present project is to identify the essential ingredients for power law behavior (or Self Organized criticality) to occur. The main experimental method is the registration of avalanches on piles of various granular materials by slow and fast (video)cameras.
